Date: August 27, 2004 The International Linear Collider ILC - the next project for particle physics - will be one of the essential tools to answer new and emerging questions about matter, energy, space and time – tackling the fundamental questions about the origin of matter and the fundamental forces. 2700 researchers from all over the world have signed a document: "Understanding Matter, Energy, Space and Time", including the consensus that the ILC would be an essential complement of the Large Hadron Collider LHC which is currently being built at CERN in Geneva. Since the beginning of the 1990s, R&D work is carried out on various technological concepts in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Before the end of this year – possibly just before the start of ESOF2004 – the International Technology Recommendation Panel ITRP will announce their on choice of technology (normally conducting or superconducting acceleration resonators) for the ILC. From the today's point of view the commisioning of the ILC could start in 2015. Prof. Michael Kobel, Bonn University, Germany, organizer of the ILC Prof. Gerard‘t Hooft, Utrecht University, Netherlands Nobel Laureate for the basic proof of consistency of today’s theory of matter and interactions, gives an overview of current "hot topics" in particle physics theory. Prof. Licia Verde, University of Pennsylvania, USA Cosmologist, talks on the close relations of particle physics with cosmology. Prof. Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Directorate, Hamburg, Germany and member of ECFA and of the International Committe of Future Accelerators ICFA, reports on future facilities for the enterprise of particle physics worldwide that are already under construction or currently planned.
